Grown Local, Buy Local: Austin’s 8th Annual Farmers’ Markets

One of the things I love most about Austin is the availability of fresh produce grown locally. From Whole Foods to Central Market, Austinites have the ability to find amazingly fresh and organic food without traveling too far to get it. However, this weekend I am challenging you to ditch your regular grocery story routine, grab your reusable grocery bags, and head on over to one of three farmers’ markets in the Austin area this Saturday. Not only will you get the chance to buy amazing products in a new and exciting way, but you will be supporting your local businesses as well. The money you spend here, stays here, and supports the people you know and the communities you’re a part of.

South Austinites have been gathering since 1990 for one of the oldest and smallest farmers markets in the area, the South Austin Farmers’ Market. What has become a Saturday morning tradition for many, takes place in the El Gallo Restaurant’s parking lot from 9am to 1pm. Free admittance brings families, kids, dogs and neighbors to this “growers only” farmers market, featuring fresh in-season fruits and vegetables, breads, canned goods and even pesto. Can’t come this Saturday? This farmer’s market is held open every Saturday morning, 51 weeks a year.

Need more than just groceries? Head on over to Barton Creek Square Mall this Saturday for the Barton Creek Farmers’ Market. From 9am to 1pm this mall’s parking lot is host to fresh, organic produce, meat, poultry, eggs, cheeses and delectable prepared foods. The only rule…vendors must sell only what they grow or produce themselves. Bringing you the heart and soul of Texas growers and manufacturers directly to you! You may not even need to step foot in the mall when you see the pottery, jewelry, clothing, poems, soap, body products, and more that this one of a kind farmers’ market has to offer.

The Barton Creek Farmers Market was voted in the top 10 farmers’ markets in the country in both 2008 and 2009, and it doesn’t stop there; it was also voted by Eating Well Magazine as one of the top 5 farmers’ markets in the country! Our very own Austin Chronicle even ranked it the Best of 2007 and 2008 for their Reader’s Poll ‘Best Farmers’ Market.’

However, what would Austin be without a farmers’ market right smack dab in the heart of downtown Austin? So don’t worry Central Austinities, Downtown Dwellers, and Campus Crusaders there is one more farmers’ market especially for you! Over 1,000 people are expected to cruise through Republic Square Park on 4th and Guadalupe from 9am to 1pm this Saturday for The Austin Farmer’s Market. Co-sponsored by the City of Austin, City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, and the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department make this farmers’ market an Austin backed original.

Feeling philanthropic? Proceeds from this farmers market will contribute to the Project of Sustainable Food Center, a non-profit devoted to helping people gain access to healthy and local food via farmer’s markets, farm stands, community gardens and grassroots cooking classes. Buy fresh vegetables from more than a dozen farmers, as well as, meats, cheeses, ready-to-eat foods, sweets, flowers, and plants. Also, enjoy chef demos, garden workshops, children’s activities, local bands, quality crafts, and a social gathering that will jump start your Saturday morning!

So whether you’re new to Austin, relocating to Austin, or simply visiting for the weekend, there is a farmers’ market that will be sure to excite your palate, recharge your senses, and support the city we know and love. See you there!
